Ailton Krenak reminds us that fauna is not just objects of contemplation, but a complex network of subjects. This soft pastel painting on paper portrays the red-eyed tree frog in a vigilant stance. Despite remaining hidden during the day, with its eyes closed and hands concealed, at night, in the shadows, it is a hunter. If detected by a predator, it uses the intense saturation of its eyes and feet to startle it, buying time to hide.

This artwork portrays the Crocus, the first flower to tear through the ice at the end of winter. For many months, in the dark, yet with energy stored from the very last sunlight, it generates enough heat around its stem to melt the frozen earth.

The Monstera deliciosa is born on the dark forest floor and spends its life trying to leave it. When it germinates, the seedling grows toward the darkest area, usually the base of large trees. As it begins to grow and use the tree as support, its behavior changes: it starts to seek the light. During its development, the plant forms splits in its leaves, an adaptation that solves two problems: it allows light to pass through to its lower leaves and increases its resistance to strong winds and torrential rains that pass right through these openings.

The periwinkle thrives in the shadows of the forest floor. Often considered an invasive species due to its extreme adaptability and resilience, the periwinkle spreads through dense networks that help retain soil moisture. Despite its poisonous chemical arsenal, the geometry of its flowers acts as a target to guide the right pollinators inside.

Resting in the hostile pitch-black of the tropical soil, the color orange communicates danger. Unlike the delicate popular image of the ladybug, it is a true war machine and a highly efficient, brutal predator. A single adult can devour thousands of aphids, scale insects, and mites during its lifetime. When attacked by a larger predator, it secretes a highly toxic, foul-smelling yellow fluid from the joints of its legs. A true chemical warfare.

Labeled as a "weed," clover is part of a complex soil fertilization process that sustains an entire ecosystem.

Beneath the earth, in the dark, small clover nodules serve as shelter for bacteria that fix nitrogen gas from the atmosphere, transforming it into ammonia—a natural fertilizer that will be consumed by the roots. In turn, the clover provides sugars and energy for the bacteria.
