Labeled as a "weed," clover is part of a complex soil fertilization process that sustains an entire ecosystem. Beneath the earth, in the dark, small clover nodules serve as shelter for bacteria that fix nitrogen gas from the atmosphere, transforming it into ammonia—a natural fertilizer that will be consumed by the roots. In turn, the clover provides sugars and energy for the bacteria.
